Best Massage Chairs Under $500 Reviewed

Once you go below the best massage chairs under $1000, it’s necessary to dig deep to find chairs that deliver a quality massage for under $500. I would avoid a lot of the copycat chairs you might run into during your search that offer vibration massage only. Those are the best cheapest massage chairs, however, you get a better massage for the money with the chairs in this guide.

The good news is that shiatsu rollers do come into play in the under $500 price range. The bad news is that to get shiatsu rollers, you’ll have to sacrifice other features, such as a footrest or a full-size recliner chair. The advantage is that you still get a great massage and save yourself some space & money. I was actually impressed by the quality of the massage performed by the chairs in this guide.

In each review below, be sure to pay close attention to the summaries and pros & cons to ensure you land on the right chair. For example, you may like a chair that’s too small or doesn’t offer the features you want the most.

Oways Rocking Massage Chair

Of all the top affordable massage chairs on the market, the Oways Rocking Massage Chair impresses me the most. Keep in mind, this chair offers real massage rollers for the same price as a lot of chairs that offer vibration massage only. Along with the rollers, the chair features both heat and vibration settings to up the overall quality of the massage experience.

In total, there are 8 massage rollers that move up & down along the back and neck. This feature is really what sets this chair apart from the others in this price range. There are 3 vibrating motors in the seat of the chair and heating in the back. Users who suffer from chronic back pain will find that this chair is one of the best of the 5 in this guide.

One feature I want to highlight that makes a major difference is the 20-minute max massage period. A lot of chairs in this price range and even higher only offer up to 15-minute sessions. This is an important spec to be aware of before you buy a chair to avoid any unwanted surprises. Choose between 3 kneading and tapping intensity levels. The chair itself has 3 positions, and of course, there’s the ability to rock the chair while enjoying your massage.

A couple of final highlights I want to point out are the 1-year warranty and adjustable height on the neck massage rollers to accommodate a wider range of user heights. Most chairs in this price range don’t offer definitive warranty info, or there’s a need to buy an extended warranty. With this chair, you at least know you’re getting a 1-year warranty.

Below are the pros and cons I found reported by owners in the Oways Rocking Massage Chair reviews:

  • The materials – especially the wood – are attractive, high-quality, and durable
  • Easy assembly (arrives in 4 main pieces)
  • Massage pressure is more than ample to get a deep massage
  • An excellent massage chair for relaxing after a stressful day
  • The thickness of the seat cushion is perfect
  • The heat and vibration settings both work marvelously
  • Works better than massage cushions
  • The neck massage feels amazing (this is a key selling point because even massage chairs that cost $1000s sometimes fall short in this department)
  • May require extra padding to sit in for long periods
  • The massage is too intense for some users without padding
  • The footrest may not feel long enough
  • It may not rock as well as you’d like
  • Too small according to some users

Esright Massage Recliner Chair

If you’re on the hunt for a full-size recliner with basic massage functionality, this is a tough chair to beat. The most important point to keep in mind is that this style of chair offers vibration massage only. The key is to choose a chair with the most vibrating motors to cover more of your body. In the under $500 category, the Esright Massage Recliner Chair offers the most vibrating motors with a total of 8. You have the option to choose between 5 massage modes and 2 intensity levels.

The second feature that’s nice to see is lumbar heat. This is a critical feature to look for to enhance the quality of any back massage in a massage chair. If you never experienced a heated massage in a massage chair, you’ll soon discover how much of a difference it makes. The third feature I like is that this chair is a recliner that also rocks with a 360º swivel base.

There are convenience features, including 2 cup holders in the armrests, side pockets, and a remote for the massage settings. The 140º max recline angle isn’t zero gravity, but it does make a major difference when you realize how much better the massage feels in the reclined position.

All in all, this is a good massage recliner chair for the money that delivers a better overall massage than similar models. The one drawback that turns me off is the lack of warranty information since Esright is a relatively unknown company.

Below are the pros & cons I found reported by users in the Esright reviews:

  • The back heater is strong and feels excellent when used together with the vibrating massage
  • Comfortable enough to use as a full-time recliner
  • High customer service marks
  • Approved by users 6’+ and 250lbs+
  • The massage might be better than you expected
  • Long massage intervals up to 30 minutes (this is a key selling point)
  • The chair itself is very comfortable, comfort that’s unbeatable in this price range
  • The recliner functions smoothly, and it’s easy to close the footrest with your legs
  • Recommended by users with back pain
  • Swiveling the chair too far can cause the remote to disconnect
  • The natural position might be more upright than you’d like
  • Be sure to consider the dimensions because the chair is smaller than it looks in photos
  • A pull cord reclines the chair
  • A handful of reported problems with the stitching

Silvox Folding Massage Chair

Of the chairs in this guide, the Silvox folding model is the best massage chair under $500 as far as the massage experience. Yes, it’s not a recliner and has no footrest, but if you want a good massage, this is the best affordable massage chair on the market to get the job done. The main feature that I like the most is the real shiatsu rollers in the neck and back regions. These are similar to the rollers found in premium massage chairs.

There are 6 total massage nodes that deliver a deep-kneading shiatsu massage experience. The rollers target your neck, shoulders, upper back, lower back, and waist for a truly relaxing massage experience. Another highlight is the heating element in the back of the chair that enhances the effectiveness of the back massage. Along with the rollers and heat, there are 3 levels of vibration intensity in the seat of the chair.

One key feature that I like to see is the adjustable height of the neck massager. Oftentimes, even expensive massage chairs miss on the neck massage, and users are left with something to be desired after spending $1000s. This chair has 2 designated massage nodes in the neck massager, and the adjustable height ensures that users of most heights get a proper neck massage.

While the chair is not a traditional recliner, it does recline to a max of 130º for added comfort. The mighty-sturdy frame holds to 400 lbs, which I found to be impressive and a signal that this chair is well-built. One final feature you might like is the integrated USB charging port.

One drawback that I noticed is the 15-minute max massage period. There also appears to be some confusion because the product image states that the max interval is 20 minutes. According to my findings, it’s 15 minutes. Lastly, there’s no warranty info provided for this chair.

These are the pros and cons I found reported by owners in the Silvox reviews:

  • An excellent affordable massage chair for back pain
  • The most portable chair in this guide
  • A thorough neck & back massage, awesome value for the money
  • Quiet operation that won’t disturb others around you (good for office settings)
  • Most users are surprised by the quality of the massage
  • Good for relaxing after a hard workout at the gym
  • Approved by users 200+ lbs
  • The best thing to come home to after a stressful day at work
  • Recommended by users recovering from back surgery
  • Short users below 5’3″ may need to put some cushioning on the seat to get proper shoulder coverage
  • A couple of reports about the rollers malfunctioning after several months
  • Not comfortable according to a handful of users

Best Choice Products Massage Chair

Now, we’re returning to the vibration massage chair realm with the Best Choice Products Massage Chair. Despite being a vibration massage chair, this is a good model for the money. At the time of this writing, this chair is the most affordable massage chair in this guide. The feature I like the most is the included ottoman massager. If you missed having a foot massager with the Silvox model above, then the Best Choice Products chair might be more up your alley.

The vibrating motors in the chair specifically target the upper back, lower back, thighs, and feet. A feature that surprised me in this price range is the heat function. You also get the convenience of a remote, plus the chair does recline. Outside of the massage functions, the aesthetic quality of the chair is its biggest selling point. This chair is perfect for office settings, a home office, or even in most living rooms.

In total, there are 5 auto massage modes, 9 intensity levels, and 2 kneading modes. That’s not bad at all for a vibrating massage chair. One drawback to consider before you buy this chair is the low weight limit of 200 lbs. Big & tall folks will certainly want to choose a different chair. Similar to most chairs in this price range, there’s no warranty info supplied by the seller.

These are the pros & cons I found reported by owners in the Best Choice Products Massage Chair reviews:

  • A very comfortable chair with soft materials that may just lull you to sleep
  • Smooth & quiet swivel function
  • Recommended for use as a massage gaming chair
  • Easy to assemble
  • Looks attractive in most environments
  • The massage and heat levels are perfect
  • An excellent investment for people who find massage rollers to be too intense
  • A soothing massage after a long day at work
  • Reclines far enough to up the quality of the massage
  • The directions could be better
  • No height adjustment
  • Reported odor by several users the first days after arrival
  • The level of vibration may leave something to be desired

BestMassage Massage Chair

The BestMassage Massage Chair is the best overall massage chair in this guide for small & short people. I’m actually somewhat amazed by the features in this chair. That’s not to say that they’re of the same quality as massage chairs that cost $1000s, but these are features typically found in massage chairs that cost $1000s. The key feature here is an SL-Track. An SL-Track extends the coverage of the massage rollers from the back to below the seat on the same track. As I mentioned already, this is a premium massage chair feature and one that’s difficult to find in a massage chair under $500.

In total, there are 4 massage rollers with 6 total nodes. Choose between kneading, knocking, and tapping modes. The integrated control panel on the side of the chair makes it easy to make adjustments. Plus, no need to reach for a remote or worry about misplacing it. There are 3 auto massage modes, plus additional modes that allow you to choose between massage techniques.

An interesting feature in this chair is air compression in the hip region. From my findings, smaller users enjoy this feature, while larger folks will most likely experience discomfort when the airbags fully inflate. The final premium feature that made its way into this chair is Bluetooth speakers for playing your favorite music during your massage. Of the chairs in this guide, this is one of the only models that offer a clear 1-year warranty period.

Below are the pros and cons reported by current owners in the BestMassage reviews:

  • The transportation wheels are a nice touch that makes the chair easy to move around
  • Compact design that fits in tighter spots and offices
  • Recommended by users suffering from back and shoulder pain
  • The chair itself is very comfortable
  • Awesome value for the money
  • An integrated USB port and phone holder
  • Back, shoulder and buttocks coverage are outstanding
  • A top-notch massage experience for a discounted price
  • Big & tall folks will want to steer clear of this chair
  • Larger indivduals don’t like the air compression massage
  • No foot & calf massage or footrest
  • The control panel can be difficult to use while seated in the chair
  • No heat

Bottom Line

Now you understand what makes the best affordable massage chair and the features to look for in the under $500 price range. I’ll admit that I had to dig deep to find the top chairs available in this price range because I’m accustomed to testing and reviewing premium models. Overall, I’m surprised by what I found in this price range. SL-Track and real shiatsu rollers are the main features to look for in this category.

When you choose a chair that features vibration massage therapy only, you may be disappointed. The key is to know what you’re getting into before you buy a vibrating massage chair because a lot of users find that they do get the job done. If you’re someone who’s accustomed to using massage chairs with rollers, then you’ll want to choose the BestMassage, Oways, or Silvox models in this guide.
